Wow, that one slipped by! I thought I was being vigilant too :-). Thanks for pointing it out. Some day the bots are going to produce really coherent messages. But probably not in my lifetime.
I believe it is because this is the first topic ID that new members can reply to. The bot probably tries every earlier ID first. But you make an interesting observation -- perhaps I should find a way to make posts in this topic invisible or something. Something for when I have a bit more time :-)
I've been considering Akismet but following your recommendation, I've gone ahead and put it in. Let's hope it helps! We actually have had two anti-spam systems in place that have caught the majority of attempted spam posts, letting about 5% through it seems. The problem is the attempts just keep going up.

Can you implement Akismet? I believe there is a version that works with the underlying CMS here.
